If not for the onelist and John Beale's site, I'm not sure I would enjoy this camera half as much, altho I now know how it outshines others in the same bracket
Lack of mention in manual of useful details.
This is a really excellent cam (despite the repair problem) Very happy over-all but I have strong concerns about the reliability of the DV format in general.
I almost exclusively use the camera for stills, shooting video, grabbing single frames from my firewire equiped PC.
Sony gets the survey results.
Sony couldn't fix the sound problems with my PD-100 so I am scheduled to receive a PD-100A which will hopfully have improved sound.
I use it for in-car racing footage. I place the external mic near the engine so that engine sound is recorded rather than wind noise.
If progressive scan was 30 fps, I'd be COMPLETELY satisfied.
Planning to add stabilizer (probably Glidecam) and Studio 1 XLR adapter.
It got splashed with water and acted up for 1/2 hour. Fine after it dried out.

I do a lot of golf swing analysis and am continually recording over old stuff. On one particular tape I have re-recorded over 80 times, in about 5 months, with NO problems. Tape is as good as new.
Looking for good underwater housing.
Using LP heavily now, although started out on only SP.
The TRV900 works flawlessly with Canopus' DVRaptor.
Quite stagering performance in a tiny box. Blows the competition away.
A delightful camera for pros and comsumers alike. Its manual operation could be better explained and better designed.
Do not like battery charging setup, Man. Focus is in way of mic., Some menu controls should be on the outside
Compact size is nice but buttons and connectors are just too crowded together; would like ergonomically designed body to fit hand more naturally (my Canon A1 Digital, though heavier, is more comfortable due to curved body)
Would like to collaborate with other TRVers. bk277@lafn.org
interchangeable accessories with my TRV9
Great Camera and my edits in the PC through the DVRaptor went great, I recommend it to evryone! Most of the problems don't really bother me, my main concern is the DV format not getting popular because so far tapes/support/batteries and other accessories are really HARD to find in Brazil !
Thanks again
Takes too much time to navigate menus and having to have LCD screen open to use controls is hindering. Don't like multiple purpose controls in general, but realize this is necessary to keep down camera size.
Want to get wireless and shot-gun mics.
I ended up tearing off the connector panel plastic flap, it would never close when I wanted it to, so I pulled it off.
The TRV-900 is an excellent entry level camera for someone wishing to become a serious pro. No regrets. I appreciate your interest in the technology, and in particular, in the TRV-900. If there is anything I can do to assist, please let me know.
Thank You, John for Your great web site! It does the job that Sony`s manual doesn`t plus much more!
Out of 25 tapes I have had one audio and one video dropout.
- Since the camera fell out of my bag (4 feet high) on a concrete floor on the corner of the rectangle lens cover which actually protected the camera, I seldom take it off anymore. - I would like a handle on top of the camera like the XL1 - I wonder why the tapes are so expensive in Europe compared to USA and Asia
Though I indicated "USA" as my country of use, that's because I live and work here; but, most of my videography takes place overseas (S. America, SE Asia, Europe).
would benefit from more accurate color representation on LCD, easier access to manual controls, line input on camera setting, etc.
Obviously my experience is limited with the trv900, and would probably care to update this, or re submit.
Thanks again for the Web page.
After using the '900 for several month, I get the impression that Sony let the engineers finish an excellent piece of technology, then turned it over to marketing people for tweaking. The marketeers decided that some very-easy-to-implement features were a bit 'too professional' for an inexpensive camera. I love the idea that Sony provided a plug-in disk drive, but they had to know I would need to BUY an external charger, while I might not buy the external drive. Same for ability to record DVPRO format (what would this have cost, another set of heads and some software, maybe $30 to include at manufacturing level?) Menu button outside the LCD is another example. Come on Sony, how much software change would it take to make the menu choices configurable? That way, if I use colorbars the most, I could move it to the top. Or maybe I really get into manually tweaking the audio, I could make it first choice. Criticism aside, I really like it!
Is there a place for a 900/VAIO sub-group? These two whizzes work SO well together.
John, if you decide to write an Instruction Manual pls let me know !!! I hope, you would include the PD100 with its (not too many) differences.
I'm a broadcast professional and this camera is the most fun of any I've ever used.
On the infamous internal mike buzz: I hear it when recording and playing back; however, I hear no noise whatsoever on my my low-tech VHS dubs, even when I'm sitting right in front of my TV screen.
Excellent camera.
Very little to fault with the camera iteself, perhaps position of menu and zebra.
Overall camera is meeting my expections and I am still learning to get more from it.
Use of LP mode with TDK tape resulted in severe dropouts. I now stick to Sony's best grade tape at SP speed.
Haven't yet learned how to maximize this camera's potential. Still experimenting.
30 fps progressive scan, please viewfinder stray light isolation is marginal many little buttons look and feel the same - move seldom used buttons away from frequently used ones can't concurrently change shutter speeds and aperture due to poor image quality, "photo mode" seems useless except to consume tape external viewfinder needs more robust protection my other Sony camcorder (Hi8)has exhibited tape eject switch problems
Very informative Web Site: A+, minimum (do continue!!)
Now the 3 new CCD's and up to 650 lines!
I swap in and out of progressive scan mode a lot(videoing gymnasts to analyse technique) and having to do this via the menu system drives me nuts (oh for a simple toggle button). I desperately need a wide angle lens to get close enough to the subject to compensate for the limited range of the microphone.
This is a great high end comsumer camera.
I think this camera is great, considering it was only 2000 and its a sony WITH all the features most of the other 2600 3ccd cameras would never dream of having, not even considering sony's good rep.
Thanks for a great website!
Camera is very sturdy--been banged around and still work perfectly.
3rd camcorder, 2nd digital -- very impressed with picture quality and options provided for the price. Audio input/quality could be somewhat better, but hey its a camcorder...
I really enjoy my camera. The lack of an seperate battery charging system is unexcusable given the price you pay.
I have had an intermittant problem with slight flickering - perhaps involving the need to use the ND filter.
none.
Found that using SoftFX2 filter is necessary most of the time to reduce the unnecessary details, also, gives the footage look as it was shot on a higher resolution camera since it looks softer.
It's too big and heavy compared with some other MiniDV camcorders.
Wish it came with a decent manual. Having problems with over-exposure in bright sunlight.Still trying to figure out whether to use the gain Shift or the AE Shift or both.
There is room for improvement, but for $2K, you can't find a better Mini DV camera!
I have three TRV900s and use them mostly for sports and event video. I love them!
I really like this thing. I bought it about one hour before my youngest son was born, provided they could learn me how to use it in 5 minutes. I did end up taking pictures though, as I didn't quite trust myself with it yet.
POrice vs Reliability is very poor. I've only had the camera a number of weeks before it developed the fault
The camera is great, We often use it to recored on DV from the S-Video input.
Owned the Camera for one month and have a stuck zoom rocker-switch already.
The LCD screen always seems cluttered with lots of information not crucial to getting a good shot.
My TRV900 purchasing decision, to the most part, was based on the info provided by John Beale on his web page then. I am really glad to take part in this survey.
modified Beachtec so that mono xlr adapter 48 volts phantome can be used on the Beachtec. I used on de pd100ap the panasonic 120 dv tapes In dvcam the tapes give 54 minutes recording time
works well with G3 Firewire.
the 900 is the mini-DV equivalent of an M series Leica
Great camera, I had been using a Sony High 8 and what an improvement.
Bleeds reds. Have problem with buttons and white bal. No separate battery charge I normally use Beta sp but use the 900 for private work all in all apart from service I love it. I really am annoyed about the service aspect. I mean REALLY ANNOYED
The TRV900 kicks ass!!!!!!
Am currently playing around with EditDV unplugged and MotoDV on a laptop that has a firewire interface. So far I can't get everything to work.
To get the very best out of the camera you must understand the functions and use of the manual modes. Unfortunately the User Manual is not very well written in this respect and even after several re-reads its difficult to get a grip of. In answer to this: Experiment, Experiment, Experiment. But wouldn't it be nice if someone wrote and published a supplementary User Guide.
THANKS John for your recommendations and tip on OneCall, and of course, a VERY EXCELLENT site for information!
Primarily use on board microphone to capture ambient sounds. Goal is to enhance sound in post production. Would like to learn more about lighting techniques for this format. Thanks John for a great site. I purchased my 900 as a result of review of your site.
Fun camera to learn with.
Problem maintaining exact picture proportion when exporting stills via floppy drive
Outstanding camera especially at the price
5 months use and very disappointed
Fulfilled my need for a high-quality/low profile camcorder for professsional coverage of events.
I have used video units from RCA tk100 studio cameras, hitachi and jvc eng's using plumbicons, saticons, and the first ccd's. This camera performs as well as any studio units that were available more than ten years ago. It was a very pleasant experience from the first time I picked it up.
As a professional I guess I expected better resolution out of this camera. As you zoom out things just lose the crispness mainly due to cheap optics.
The head cleanings were necessary when using the Panasonic 80 min tapes. I also took the precaution of cleaning the heads before switching to NEW Panasonic tapes. I started out using Panasonic tapes which were at least 2-3 years old and had been used several times previously. After reading about the possibility of tape formula change causing build-up, I decided to clean before using the new tapes. Side note: I did NOT clean the heads on my old Sony 700 digital recorder, and when using it as the editing machine it started pixelating the images after the 4th tape. It has been sent in under the extended warranty for repair. I tried cleaning the heads 4 times with no success.
Motor noise during playback only applies to underwater footage. The housing amplifies the noise and dampens other sound causing the gain to go up.
Needs zoom speed controller and a spam remover for the viewfinder
sony customer service is terrible. for example, they cannot verify receipt of the camera since i fed expressed it to the bristol, pa location 3 days ago (although fed ex has a signature for its receipt). the customer service reps have done nothing to make me believe that the camera will be repaired properly (this is their 2nd attempt at fixing the same problems) or expeditiously.
Still learning features after three months of videoing in India
great unit for the price... IMO GL1's picture seems better...
Sony's operating instructions are so good that one really needs John Beale's website
The John Beale web pages helped convince me to buy the camera, in part because it was like having a local users' group to consult.
The best looking footage so far has been in outdoor shade or mixed shade and hints of direct sunlight. I am not thrilled with the direct sunlight footage. And indoor with window light is also very beautiful. I have tried a nikon #1 soft focus filter with the B&W function and really like it for simulating the old hollywood style diffusion.
I have two of these and use them primarily to tape consumer interviews. My New York ad clients are shocked at the quality of the images that we produce in office environments.
Another happy (regular) bealecorner site visitor
Excellent camera, and I'd buy it again in a heart beat!
If buying today, would probably purchase Canon GL-1
I have shot over 500 2hr tapes as a amateur in 6 formats over 15 yrs(10 camera's) .This camera for my need is 2nd to none.a real JOY
Totally new with this. Bought it as a tool for our high school outdoor pursuits program to create digital videos of our diverse outdoor programs
Overall, very pleased. This is my 4th or 5th Video camera, Still using Canon ES6000.
Add a ordinary tire inflation valve in the SPK-DVF2 and put in one and a 2 Bar (about 35 PSI) and you can go down too 10 meters or about 33 feet. Test it first with out the camera!!!! It works for me.
too be able to transfer still images via fire wire would be nice
I have not been able to get the crisp, clear pictures that I have seen on the internet.
Just purchased a Canopus Raptor and a Sony DVMC-DA1. Pluged the board into my system. Once I had the cables correctly plugged in, everything WORKED! Very pleased so far but I have not edited much video yet.
used underwater in ikelite housing, great housing, simple to use
I've completely stopped using my Canon L2 Hi-8 since I bought the Sony.
notice dropouts on last minutes of 60 min JVC tapes
I just love the TRV900 and the image quality. great value for money. have used it in Asia during hot humid summers, in winter time in the USA during skiing. never let me down. would buy it again.
Sennheiser mini p[lug gun mike at about £105 very good
Wish filters would go on behind lens hood (w/o modification), but overall quite happy with the camera. Wish miniDV tapes were less expensive and longer.
My interest is in birds and wildlife, I am dying for the 20X, I am considering jumping ship and get the Canon GL1, I can just hope that Canon is as good in electronics as Sony. Also, thank you very much for the website, you are my main source of information in this field. Please keep it up. If there is anything I can do, just email.
still learning about the camera, your page has helped out alot...thanks
I reside in Papua New Guinea so unable to get easyservice or repair.
Tape crinkle problem recently occurred. I have not yet sent camera in for repair.
have had camera replaced by the people i aquired it from. No help fro sony help desk plenty of sympathy but no action.
The still picture quality, while outstanding for its class, still makes me want more. I've seen digital pictures made with a 3.3 megapixel camera and fell in love. Now I'm considering adding a dedicated digital camera.
I cannot find a tape adapter to play a mini dv tape in a dv deck.
Fantastic camera. Instead of buying a DV deck, I went ahead and picked up a second TRV 900 to do tape to tape copies of source tapes and provide dual camera production capability.
I haven't had any tape crimping problems, but I have stopped using the camera to rewind tapes nearing the end of the reel since I read about the problem a couple of months ago.
incredible site, John! thanks for all the info. I refer to your page often and don't know what I'd do without it.
I use the firewire to edit my packages on Media 100, Final Cut Pro and iMovie with NO problems. the remote is great for hooking up the camera to your home tv and reviewing your footage on your couch while relaxing
I'd like to see DV cameras have an option of cliping at 100 and 7.5 IRE.
I want to get the wide angle adaptor and a steadycam
Had very good price and service from BuyDig.com (Worldwide Direct), but don't expect them to take a defective unit back - they refer you to Sony. Understandable at the price I guess.
John, your excellent website helped me initially with my search for the camera one year ago, and since then has helped me find accessories and other info.
I am beomming scared of the tape crinkle I now have to shoot direct to Svhs Deck for peace of mind Which is ok in a static position with power
Great bag - Lowepro Sideline Shooter...fits TRV900 with hood AND F960 battery on, with room to spare for 4-5 tapes, extra battery, remote controller, and some cables.
A non-brainer:absolutely amazing picture-quality & features, convenience is hard to top both as a consumer or as a prosumer model. Fun to use, and always impressive results.
Inexplicably switches itself into widescreen mode when connected in VTR mode to my Sony widescreen RPTV via S-video, but fine using composite
Would like to find email address of user group
Expect to be happy with the camewra for many years
Your website was instrumental in my purchase. Thankyou.
Just a great camcorder recommended to any and ever body.
Thanks for a great site - it played a big role in my purchase decision.
I am noticing motor noise and nasty noise when using an external Sennheiser 300 - a hum of some kind which is not preseent when the mic is NOt mounted on the camera....
I haven't experienced tape crinkle like others, but I will keep on the look out
The small size and many features make the DCR-TRV900 a very powerful visual communications tool!
Camera will be used primarily for underwater video production
I have found a way to double the resolution of the 640 X 480 stills to 1280 X 960 using software and they print out awesome on 5 X 7 or 8 X 10. FYI the camera seems to have a phase compensating noise reduction system. When you pause you get noise but not when recording. Same for the DCR-TRV-8 and TRV 10. Great systme to get rid of transport noise but I sometimes hear the lens zoom noise if I go to fast.
I wish I'd never bought it!
have used with (now defunct) Bravado DV 2000 with pretty good results - only one project so far
This is a wonderful camera for someone who wants to have a better than average video image and wants the flexibility of using it for stills as well. I am still learning what this camera can do!
good still pictures using the still mode instead of the photo mode which is limited to 7 seconds
Just got a VX-2000, sure is better at about the same price I originally paid for the 900
i know haveing this camera for a short time but love it so far
Controls are adaquate. Larger controls would help
i am dealer at Cameras Inc. in Arlington Ma, and it is my most highest recomendation
I've always used my trv900 as my backup and b-roll camera; first with an XL1 and now with a JVC dv500. The camera has always done a fantastic job, and even does duty as my "deck" with my FCP editing system. Reasonably rugged, very reliable, good image (needs to be warmed up a bit to match many other cameras), and all around terrific camera.
extremely fine job, thank You John!
Should have less gimmicks (wipes, fades, filters etc), instead wide angle less, more usefull manual exposure controls. I expect movie manipulation been done on the computer not during takes within camera. Never used it, doesn't make sense. Should have a combined optical & electronic image stabilizer for better shake and vibration control.
Takes great still photos, but use of floppy is akward.
tape crinkle under control by manual cleaning of capstan / use of JVC deck to playback
don't like the mini plug input for mic
I started shooting weddings in 1985. Back then you couldn't get this kind of camera quality at any price. It's nice to be able to focus on creative stuff now and not worry about the quality.
I used this camera mostly to video birds at a distance. I take the videos through the eyepiece of a birding scopes. Sample pictures at my album http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=25214 are mostly taken with this camcorder.
only had the camera a short time and I had to send it back for repair already....
Just bought this outstanding camera after half a year wait. I've printed out almost everything on your site, and visit frequently. You have made a huge impact on my decision to buy it! Erik K. Veland Norway
bought from OneCall for $1934 in Aug 1999. Good experience with them. The camera fell onto hard concrete from a height of 6 feet once. The plastic near the still photo button cracked. But it has been working perfectly.
Thanks for hosting this site. I just started noticing the tape crinkle thing... Sure enough there's a build-up of crud just as in the pictures.
The only thing that i think they can better is a better lens, removable lens and xlr connectors. The audio controls are hard to get to when you need them.
Needs better image stabalization. optical and mechanical. Needs interchangeable lenses.
The Spanish technical service of Sony it's "patetic". I'm very unhappy because they are "incompetent" technics.
one of the few things I have bought, spending more that I wanted, but NEVER regreted doing so
Bought 3year extended warranty for $100. Was well worth the money since the sound problem repair was $300.
Thanks to your very informative and great all around website(Bealecorner.com)I purchased the Sony TRV-900 and have not regretted it since. Sony should pay you a commission!
We bought our camera at a Retailer who sold us a five year warranty. We thought it was a Sony warranty and when our camera broke we took it to Sony for repair and to this day I had to pick up the tab for the repair. The warranty company said that I didn't "initiate" the warranty in a timely manner so therefore it was invalid! I paid $299 for the warranty. I'm still working on this. My camera was out of commission for four months. Also, I was in Canada on a temporary job assignment at the time and that was part of the problem. Seems Sony canada and Sony U.S. don't know about each other and don't won't too. As as consumer I was very unhappy with the service.
I mostly smile to my camera.
I love this camera and can't wait to try to use it to it's full potential.
Your site is terrific.
My LCD screen has one singal pixel that is always a light blue colour and never changes; any suggestions???!!!
Decided to buy after visiting this web site - not disappointed. Many thanks!
It's my first 3ccd digital and I do love the professional quality of this camera. I do wish there were more info in manual about the manual functions
I wish the outside panel of the LCD screen had an indentation groove or a non-slip area (rubberised?), to give a more confident finger grip when picking the camera up with one hand. Before using the camera I familiarised with the controls. It would have been very helpful if the manual had said (perhaps it does somewhere), that the Playback controls panel on the camera, LIGHTS UP from inside, when in VTR Mode. I wrongly suspected that a patch of labels was missing from my machine. A phone call put me right.
Maybe later when I use the unit more.....For now I love it....I must also say thanks to all who kept me in front of my computer for 3 nights reading all of the info on this camera and to all the hard work you people have done for this web site....Thanks so much........Bruce
I like the camrea alot!
would be very interested to know if frequent head cleaning is concern of other owners
Very disappointed about the tape crinkle problem so early in the game. The price of the camera is low, hence the quality seems low (small, fragile parts etc.) I take the good with the bad, I suppose. I probably won't purchase a Sony again if they don't correct the tape crinkle problem.
Camera used in skydiving. Many reported problems with attachment of wide angle lense from outher skydivers, but never experienced it myself (complaints of tape flutter caused housing for the lense and weight of the lense not being supported well by the camera).
Manual sucks. I need to learn more about video/audio editing on a PC, manual doesn't help.

The reason I mostly use internal mics for audio is because I use minidisc recorders, placed in the groom's or officiant's pocket, to record dialog at wedding shoots. That method has worked very well for me.
I use Pinnacle Studio DV to edit.
in high contrast conditions it is very hard to get pictures which have fine lines, such as power cables etc., which do not get jaggies.
It seems a shame to distribute an edited final product on VHS after filming & editing digitally
Stills images saved in iMovie on iMac have better resolution (768x576 in PAL) than memory stick
I am thinking of replacing the TRV900 with a PC5. I need a reliable camera.
Love it and hate it all at the same time.
I am purchasing a Sennheiser ME66 outfit (not because of the internal audio problem, but for better audio from a distance.
great info on your website; glad to hear about other users views and info
For the price unbeatible!
I hope B&H can fix it. I bought it there in new york, I think it is a lemon. Sony in the USA said they would give me a new one but cant because it is the europeon version and so it is up to B&h to get me a new one from there Euro wholesaler, but they would not agree and promise to fix it correctly for the 2nd time... this sucks.
i never use in-camera editing functions or effects since i edit in finalcutpro
I use the TRV900 for video feed to Final Cut Pro and am satisfied with everything except the firewire connection.
if only i could get that firewire-connection to be recognized in my computer - i'd be truly happy.
Your page is so useful, I love it. Thanks alot.
i would not recommend purchasing this unit UNTIL take crinkle problem has been addressed. I have lost irreplacable footage to which Sony has maintained it's "oh well" stance!
I can't play a Premiere movie from my computer into the camera to record it. Flaw in Premiere? Or what?
Was looking for prices on the Sony GV-D900 when I stumbled across this website. Good thing. Please give advise on what to do about tapes and camera sense I've only used 5 tapes.
I had no idea what ý could do with this exellent camera until ý have purchased it. Most of the time friends from our studio think that the footage is taken by XL-1.
If I let tape go to the end while either recording or playing back, I get a "tape crinkle error"
I've been very happy with this camera. At times, I wish I had a second one!
Camera was repaired twice after tapes did not rewind.Problem still not 100% fixed.Afraid to re- wind tapes now. Record only first 45 min of 60 min tape.
sony repair center and starff are terrible. camera was sent back to me without being fixed. customer service reps are completely unhelpful.
Have a friend in the US. Have sent him tapes from my camera (PAL) which could be viewed on his camerea (US standard), however, he does'nt seem to be able to play my tapes trough his camera on his television set. Can anybody tell how to do it?
would love to be able to put interchangeable lenses on it, but I guess that's the compromise for having a camcorder-sized unit.
If I got the thing back and it worked fine under fair use for a year without any other problems, then I would be a lot happier with my purchase of it.
i think sony has made an excellent camera
nope!
For some reason I find it more difficult on this camcorder to 'square-up' the image and often end up with disturbingly slanted vertical/ horizontal lines, especially when using the viewfinder as opposed to the LCD screen.
Cannot obtain any information or specs regarding underwater accessories from Sony, NEVER
Thoroughly enjoy bealecorner.com. Filmed a lady Dr.,wavesound lo valleys & lo mtns, w/o doing p 48 found audio a real pickle. With video flash on still cast a dark shadow under normal office florescent. Disenchanted, buying 3-lite kit. Will experiment w/lapel mic fr Sony when received. Need good clean sound. Just got last mo, still new to it. On Win 2000, 950 MHz using Pinnacle's DV500 and Premiere 6 Win for editing. Did use Premiere's audio gate and hum filters somewhat, brighten another capture, however the longer the tape, the more render time needed. Lesson learned: concentrate on getting the best video & audio first. Embellish later. Maureen
Can't rely on it professionally
This camera is great
Just love it!! A very inconspicous high quality camera.
Bought a DCR-VX-700 over 5 years ago when the format first arrived. Have NEVER had a problem with that machine. I assume the quality on single CCD machines would have improved greatly. When I started shopping I was constantly dissapointed at how poorly ALL the single CCD units I looked at compared to my old 700 -- telling me that the original 700 was more "prosumer" in build and that most single CCDs today are built for nothing but a pure consumer market. I had to "step up" to the 900 to not get an inferior picture. And inded, the picture is considerably better in this 3 CCDr. Awesome. The build quality, however, looks a bit inferior to the 700. Sony took out all the stops when it built those first 2 machines (700 and 1000).
Tape crinking seems to be a general problem with digital video cameras. I think the binder technology used in DV tape compbines with the slow tape speed/high head temperatie are the culprit.
With steady shot, try a monopod for versatility - you will be amazed.
Kudos to the trv-900 - I would buy another, however the PD-150 seems to be calling my name now...
I use the camera for underwater video (Ikelite housing) mostly. The colors with or without an external light are excellent.
i think most of the problems people claim to have is cause they dont know how to use it. and also....this is a CONSUMER camera and is not made for profesionals. the camera does offer manual controls and are "hidden' to keep consumers from being overwelmed. if dont like the camera, go out and spend $3000 more for a camera that has only a slight increase in picture quality and manual controls with half the features such as timelapse and stop-motion. most of the problems can be fixed with tweaking and things such as filters, lenses and adjusting the inviroment. think off all the lighting a gameshow or news show has.
Camcorder failed after two years. Sony declared uneconomical to repair citing internal corrosion. I felt I never abused it, so why the corrosion? An independent repairman claimed Sony has problems with leaky electrolytic capacitors, which they won't admit. I was forced to buy 2nd unit, this time with extended warranty, which I hope they will honor. Anybody want an expensive paperweight?
Highly recommended.
I'm happy it's not obsolete yet (6/01) I like it a lot but can't wait to see the next generation of this camera!
Has more than returned my investment many times over, while making me a hero to my kid's hockey and baseball teams
I wish Sony had done a better job with the design, specifically getting to the Menu button, and I could certianly live WITHOUT the effects such as sepia, B&W, etc.
When useing the fisheye do not use stabalizer, this makes it look like the lense is moveing. Images look a little bit green.
I purchase this camera base on the content of this site. MOST USEFUL and Sony should give you a kick-back or your choice of any/all accessories for your efforts.
Dropped the camera once at "Old Faithful" on Vacation. Still works fine!
Your site helped me decide between the GL1 and the 900, a decision I am extremley happy with.
menu and end of tape buttons were not ergonomically placed with digital still feature you can make your own titles
I work professionally as a lighting cameraman and am used to quality gear. This camera is excellent in its class. Good pictures, good sound when not using internal mic. Love the fact that it plays DVCAM. Very pleased it has a metal body ... as mine fell 18" onto a concrete path and only suffered a scratch.
We have both bigger and smaller cameras but the 900 is our overall favourite
I have had a VX1000 for several years and got a TRV9 to use as a player and recorder and fun cam. I liked it so much I had to have a 900. Stills are great, and it is a fun thing to shoot a wedding with a 900 .
Bought to shoot underwater - but now am using camera for topside shoots too - even commercials
still a good buy after almost 3 years!!
Only works with compact flash card, don't try smart media stuff.
I love this camera but wish it had a slower zoom, graeater audio capabilities and a better lens
Solid camera, no mechanical problems, used in all types of conditions, captured good video at -20 degrees F. John, your weg site helped me select this camera and it has worked well for me. Thanks. John
I use the camera to record equestrian events and edit the video with MSP 6.0 on my Dell computer.
Used many times to record live band performances. The sound reproduction was superb every time, even with the high sound levels.
I used this camera not only to make family movies but also to make 3 documentary videos in the high Andes mountains of Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador.
So far so good with the 900. I am a wedding and event videographer and have great success. I am concerned about the mention of tape creasing and head clogging as the 900 ages. I will certainly follow all the recommended guidelines for cleaning in the future.
I wish it was as cool as the VX1000
Camera is light in weight could have better ergonomics. Lense quality is ok, but not as good as Cannon(IMHO). Camera could use better imaging system for low light like the VX2000 uses. NO true analog pass thru. Maybe I just got a lemon, but compared to Cannon, bery buggy and not as solidly built.
Excellent site. I knew next to nothing about video when I was searching for a camera and I came across your site. The information is almost exhaustive. And it convinced me to get the TRV-900. I've had very few regrets since (though see if you can convince Sony to at least put that menu button on the outside). Thanks.
Im lost the power supply. Sony asks me 23000 pesteas (120 U$$) for it. I won't buy it, i borrow my friend's (...).
I prefer the colorimetry of Canon so the next camera I'll buy will be the next canon XM1. Also because the zoom is a little bit too short for my utilisation (I film wildlife)
Final Cut Pro 2
Final Cut Pro 2
editting was for me a great barrier, I bought Adobe premiere but until now due to lack of time I did not succeed using it nore connecting the camera to my new pentium 4 computer
I shoot lots of stills using the CF-Card and am pleased that the cam does not use memsticks, but industry standard-CF. The supplied floppy-drive is useless.
Made me plenty of money - excellent little tool.
The original battery that came with camcoder died within months.Fortunately I have ordered another battery.
Next purchase: BeachTec
Thanks for having this website!
I live in Scotland, which is part of the United Kingdom (also known as Britain). I answered England above, but this is insulting to Scots.
My Sony TR-81 (Hi-8 1990) has better controls and better B&W viewfinder. What happened to those design engineers?
Have yet to find the ideal gadget bag.
3 repairs in it's first year (same with the GVD300 deck which we bought to do the camera's job while it was in repair. Both still useless. Need I say more?
I wish the progressive scan was 30 FPS so I could get better stop action within the same video takes of golf swings.
We use ours in a properly lit studio with three Sony DXC-30 (2/3" Chip) studio cameras, I use the MiniDV as an ISO tape of the TRV-900 HIGH Wide (Jib Mounted with pan tilt head) and the camera feed is run through a gen-locked TBC, then switched with our other cameras, scan converter as just another source. It is hard for us to tell the difference sometimes between the images of the floor cams and the hi-wide (trv900). FYI
In my experience (quite qide) its by far the most reliable miniDV cam when using with a firewire computer - so far its worked in every combination we have tried (unlike jvc and panasonic models)
Nice job Mr Beale, thanks
I am crazy about this DvCam even though I have had it for a couple of years. It still surprises me with brilliant features and that stunning video quality.
I travel much and use the camera when I go skiing, climbing, trekking in all clima zones.
I am very hapy with my TRV900
need a better wireless sysytem
Very happy with this camera Looking for advise on underwater housing
Material shot with this camera has been used in programmes I have made for UK and US networks. I have used Vegas Video to crop and export material to 16:9 format but I am now considering buying an anamorphic adapter.
What I did not find in the manual: It is possible to send edited DV directly from PC harddisk through the camera's S-video output to an analog SVHS recorder, the camera acting as a translator.
Hard to find much to complain about, just a very well thought out design and a pleasure to use.
Great low light performance.
i would like to see a handle on futre models, just like the GL-1, and sony could take a lesson form canon and put the basic controls on the handles of all of thier higher end models..
Buying another one as a backup and spare.
realy nice product. A little pricey for a 1998 product, but fantastic quality picture.
Not perfect, but still very good indeed....
Not perfect, but still very good indeed....
Good camera for your money, allows for above average productions
Camera's main use is underwater video.
The main usage of this cam will be to shoot local cable tv commercials and for my independent film shoots.
Many forums to share information on TRV900
Super Super video camera and will probably buy another before Sony finds out what they really gave us for so few bucks (relative to all the other makes out there...My best to you for all the info you've provided to make our lives so much easier !!!!!!!!!!!!
camera has met our needs
would buy another.
I Lost this camera outdoors in snow recovered it months later cleaned heads and it still works
i wonder what a good way of external micing would be--i heard there's an attachment that plugs into the audio and sits at the bottom of the camera to put xlr cables into
The cost of having the audio problem repaired has kept me using external mikes for a year. I will have to have it professionally cleaned soon, and will then have the audio problem fixed.
I am very careful about condensation, salt/sand and handling the camera. I have the DHR1000 tapedeck too.
Once I lost my balance on a steep embankment & rammed it into the dirt. It kept performing perfectly, though there is that rattle I must look into.
Would be nice if we could turn the color down in the view finder
have you ever heard about the problem I have today? Could you help me? Thank you very much, your web site is great...
overall a very good camcorder that would be better if they included a better microphone and lighter weight
Love the ability to use compact flash as opposed to Sony's "Memory Stix"
would get another, if I needed another camera
It would be nice to have a detailed instructional video or DVD to view as reference
Wonderful camera, and a wonderful site, John! Thanks
Thanks a lot for your page, John. My solution for the eyepiece : an old eyepiece for ECLAIR 16 is perfect ! http://www.roso.fr.fm
Although the waranty was expensive and ($435 Purchased cam and warenty at GoodGuys stores) repairs took over six weeks, it was well worth it.
I haven't used it as much as I would have liked due to ill health, but so far, I am very happy overall.
love the fact that its a "stealth hi-Q" camcorder, small but mini-pro.
Firewire problem resolution is very important to me; any advice? (I've replaced cable.)
One Excellent feature of this Camcorder with Memory stick is that one can record an event in video mode, then take "Still Photos" from the Video while it is playing back the video recorded. That has allowed some detailed shots: ie. I have a DV Photo of a squirrel holding a cracker in his pay and you can see that his nouth is open. (All I did was record him eating and then "Freeze Frame" while playing video back and use the Remote to get to exact "Frame" I wanted for Photo) Great Camcorder. The 12 Hour Battery is really the best option and lasts long time (1 to 2 years at least)
Great used camera for only a grand! Incidentally, if you choose to buy one from eBay, be very cautious because there are many morons out there trying to make a quick buck. Be sure there is a significant amount of positive feedback on anyone you're buying from. Either that or arrange to pick up the unit in person. I picked up two cameras from eBay, and got lucky that both were in fair to good condition.
I found the internal mic picked up much less noise if the camcorder was hand held, instead of on my tripod
I only found that my inconsistent, but serious, audio drop-out problem was not successfully repaired by Sony AFTER the 90 day warranty, of course. Need to take it back to another repair place, but repair costs are adding up and I'm now wondering if it's even fixable at all. Otherwise, I've loved this camera.
I only found that my inconsistent, but serious, audio drop-out problem was not successfully repaired by Sony AFTER the 90 day warranty, of course. 658 I purchased this camera after extensive research, and this your site was an invaluable source.
your site makes me feel like I am one of the club...thank you John
i need more information on getting this problem fixed and to know if i clean the heads will that help?
This camera has done very well for me, before what I am assuming is head mis-allignment occured.
I've done all I can to protect my camera (from moisture, dirt, knocks, etc.), but I'm now having serious problems with it. Unfortunately, I don't have a service centre anywhere near me and would like to know more about how I can carry out basic service myself. Some of my answers will look a bit strange - like "Has needed repair" - never! This is only because I haven't been able to get it repaired yet. Your website is VERY helpful - thanks!
I love the camera for freehand shooting and for general performance, recently purchased a VX2000, love it. Low light is superior to the 900 but it is quite heavy. The 900 I primarily use as back up now and for shooting wedding receptions.
This is a fantastic web site! I cannot say enough how useful it has been both during the desision peroid and after. Thanks...
I was interested in the Time Elapse functions, "frame interval", I was hoping for smooth transitions, but I dont thing the camera is capable of doing that? I'm not sure of the proper techniques used, maybe the TRV900E can do it??
Crinkled end of one tape - just the once.
Awesome camera for the money. Bulletproof
Glad I bought it and enjoy using it. I enjoy using it more outdoors than inside homes or buildings.
People are amazed at print image quality, especially after I tell them what camera was used.
Crinkle and the C31:00 error message has become insistent. Problem consistent with and well documented on your site. Tape seems to turn freely when lock released manually. Inspected un-locking mechanism in the camera. If the camera is inverted when the tape is loaded the problem disappears. If the position of tape in the loading mechanism is so precise, maybe the lock and potentially any mispositioning caused by dirty rollers and capstan can cause the problem. I've been quite consciencious about cleaning and will inspect further. Small post with pink plastic block in centre of tape loading area seems to assist in alignment of tape.
Very nice piece of equipment. Wish I did not drop it on the ground.
One disadvantage is the auto power off function which doensn't seem to be disabled.
very satisfied
Housing leaked but warning light saved camera.
This was a great camera for me. After over thousands of hours of use, however, it may soon be time to move on...
Very happy with it (except for the sound quality), particularly that it stayed in production for 4 years and is still a good camcorder.
Best camera ever owned, and I've had many.
Would like to get a wide angle lens next
Would like to get a wide angle lens next
Would like to get a wide angle lens next
Purchased Sony VX 2000 to be my main camera while using the TRV900 as secondary.
Great in combo with memory stick for: Record Event, then later playback and Record Photos from the Tape Recorded at an accuracy (using Play/Pause) of 30 Frames Per Second, so you can get the exact frame photo you want, then record it and develop it out as a photo.
Amazingly, its paid for itself a few times over and has a bit of life in it yet.
Buy a Canon.
A terrific prosumer camera on all counts
If only it were left handed for above water work!
An excellent camera.
I prefer a monochrome view finder for seeing details for focusing but hitting the momentary Auto Focus button seems to do the trick. It would also be nice if it could use the Sony Memory Stck without an expensive adapter.
can you tell me where I can obtain a lens hood?
Camera has been used at our campus ( Desert Mountain High School ) by students for our video production class. In the time we've owned the Sony we have had 4 other DV cameras die on us. However the Sony has kept on kicking, and still to this day is in use at our campus. Wonderful camera, will be a shame to see it leave us when it dies. Used every day, I can say we have used well over 100 tapes, probally many many more. Great site for reference, hope this is informative!
The cam has been outstanding from the go.
No problems until of late, the erratic audio.
Mr. Beale, Your TRV900 web page is one of the reasons I chose (wisely) the model. Thank you for the useful information. The camera was stolen out of my office earlier this year, but miraculously recovered after the culprit was apprehended. I was depressed during the month or two I didn't have the camera knowing that it was very difficult to replace it... After I got it back, I noticed that camera was shutting down with 'supposedly' many minutes left. I first thought that the camera might have been damaged after it was stolen, but I now believe the battery packs are acting up. I've read the battery page, and I have tried 'resistor discharge' method hoping to remedy the battery's (NPF330/550) shutting off prematurely. After several cycles, it does not seem to be working. In your experience, do they eventually get tired so that they give only a fraction of minutes without their 'brain' knowing the fact? I'd appreciate it if you could reply with some insight.
It is a shame that Sony took many the good features away when they designed trv-950.
Thanks for your great work on video transfer function vs Kodak film. I would like to see data on KMA464 film vs video, but I have found separate data on each, thanks to you and Kodak. Imagine my surprise when I looked for video transfer function on google and found that you had done the tests on MY camera.
love it to bits.. the following film was shot on a trv900... http://www.computerlove.net/theronin watch the pr.mayhem one
It's a pity that the 900 does not have a successor. There is a 950 -have no experience with that camera- but is too extensive with accessories that I don't need or am looking for in a dv camera. (internet matters etc.) Leaving that out would make the camera a little less expensive (in the Netherlands the Sony is quite expensive)
I've used it to shoot for cable documentaries and my own one man feature documentary which received good reviews
wish progressive scan did not use only half the pixels!
I pulled an xlr cable with camera mounted on tripod. Camera and tripod fell over with camera hitting on concrete floor. UV filter was bent. No damage of any kind to the camera.
What would have been great: Better AV connector, and good quality coax video connector. Separate Progressive Scan push button. Separate Menu pushbutton.
Although used professionally, I take very good care of my equipment and it takes good care of me.
i badly try to find specs for the top shoe of the TRV900, if anyone has them, let me know )))
The manual seriously needs to be rewritten. I actually think the users on this forum should combine efforts and producer their own. I refer to my own notes when using the camera, not the manual.
I want to take pictures but can't. I do not want to spend another $300 for a non-repair. Sony does not seem to care, and I am so dissapointed because I wanted the 3ccd quality, and spent so much money on this. Now I have many many tapes I can't even play. This was a major waste of my time, life is short. My last Sony Camera, that is for sure.
I think this is a great camera. I take it everywhere I go in Europe and it has always produced superior results.
Hoping for 3-ccd HD-camera in same price range some day
Automation made it possible to use 2 cameras and conduct interview all by myself.
Your website is an incredible resource, keep up the good work.
I'm really sad about the audio dropouts.
best video camera ever. If I buy another I will buy the Sony DCR-TRV950. Best camera for less than $1500
I use a JVC HR-DVS2 deck for capture, so my TRV900 tape transport only gets used while recording.
very simple to use and take quality videos
If it had sharp mono (tube) viewfinder, mechanical (or at least more direct) manual focus, wobbler based auto focus, stepless manual exposure, mechanical zoom control or separate zoom and zoom speed controls (with programmable acceleration) then it might just be perfect...
Infrequent use, recording live music performance. Firewire connects to Apple Mac for video editing.
Great site, been a visitor for years! Keep up the great work!
Great camera which I've used on most of my BBC and Discovery docs. Never had a problem getting the shots through the BBC tech review which is stringent. Audio is fiddly but manageable I just love the camera and will only upgrade once I get my hands on one of the new HDV cameras from either Sony, JVC or Panasonic
Would you mind sending me the name an address of an accomplished service center?
I'm very unhappy for that camera manufacture is stopped. For other user's I want to say: Plastic bag over the camera with hole for objective and viewfinder makes possible to use camera even heavy raining and dust. I have shooted e.g. rally in both conditions.
I've had this camera for 5 years now, only one problem which was self-fixable, and it's still going strong. No tape crinkles, very few dropouts.
Probably won't buy a Sony again....Panasonic next time.
Good when working but has proved somewhat expenesive to keep going
Bought camera in 1998, dropped on concrete, hit by wave on sailboat, never missed a beat. Bought pd170 Dec 2004. Still use trv900.
I presently have problem with Right ch. inbuilt mic softness similar to reports elsewhere on this site.
Love this camera. Bought it at Fry's Electronics in Sunnyvale,CA for $2200. Thought I was crazy but actually I'm so glad I did. Use camera most for taping ice hockey games of my children for last 6 years. Would buy this camera again!
wish batteries had longer useful life.
Now my camera is in the shop for a whole new drive mechanism and its been in the shop for the mics, dropping out video and audio, more often than in my hands. Wife wants to get a new camera, but now I know how to clean it from this web site if that is the problem most of the time.
in sub zero temperatures uit is an easy camera to keep warm - this makes it a winner for arctic conditions
none
I believe that at the time of purchase (1999) it was the best under $5000 camera available
I hope they make an HD camera like the TRV900. When they do, I will be buying it!
have used the camera ontrips to australia and south america with no problems
A pretty good camera for the price. Occassionally when it is nearly silent, the camera motor noise and gears can be heard on the audio.
Best camera you can buy for under a grand used... hands down!
wish I could get a brand new one for a low price
i have noticed tape crinkles on one tape but a bizarre problem i have noted is with audio - i hear short beeps during playback and the audio is bad. personally i suspect the mike connector plug is not a good fit but am not sure. I wish there were a Sony TRV 900 club that i could go to and talk to someone in person.
I have really enjoyed owning it, and have mainly taken it with me traveling in Europe.
a shoulder and hand grip would have been a better thought.
ive just filmed a big rock coincert competition event, and i was blown away by the colour accuracy, picture quality, and how well the inbuilt mic's worked. top camera! im soon to film a few trips in a glider over the hills of shropshire in the UK too, which should be INCREDIBLE! this camera feels like it will live on after im dead and gone, amazing purchase, second hand off my bro, but well looked after, and so rugged!!!
Bad support for interfaces, especially for kino/linux. Shame on Sony.
I now additionally own the HDR-HC1. Brilliant design but it is no match for the trv900 in low light, in versatility.
it has seen hard use and still keeps going. the newer batteries are great. what I would really like is a built in 5-7 megapixel still photo capability.
It has decided to stop playing back a picture. loads seems to lace blue screen lights up white play arrow and the dash lines showing but no picture, working fine one second changed tape which seemed as if it was blank but I new it was not, its going for repair as it is still my favourite. But while I'm waiting I might buy a HDR-HC1E that is on eBay today, All David.
I bought this camera used, so the lens cover and the floppy system didn't come with it. The microphone didn't work, but that's slolved by using an external mic.
Outstanding camera, just wish the mic had not quit.
I have owned this camera for several years and carefully kept this camera in good condition. This has been the best camera I have ever owned and hope it will last for many additional years. Several special family events recorded and then edited to DVD. Tapes with the 4K memory getting hard to find. The Floppy drive was worthless (it works though), used SD card reader, View Finder great, I simply just love this camera.
poor lens attachment design also. mine broke off without any force, just wore out the small screws. not reattachable without more disassembly.
Have been coming to this site since I purchased my 900...great job! Thanks Anything new on fixing audio dropouts?
I would rather keep it than buy a modern equivalent-everything in the same sort of semi-pro range is too bulky these days!
audio dropouts are making the camera unusable--but it's been so great up to now. i'm going to try cleaning!!
I have 2 of these and neither one has given me problems.
Originally used Panasonic tapes exclusively but recently switched to Sony excusively (after isopropyl+swab cleaning to remove tape residue buildup on roller)
love it, 8 years of reliable service, best I've had so far
Terrific camera overall. Probably should bring in for a tune up, but it has been a work horse for me... really no complaints at all
Great camera, good for little documentary's filming skateboarding, or if one of your family members want you to film a wedding of something 4.5-5.5
I loved this camara (and your site) but today I replaced it with an HDR-SR12. It was time.
Buy a cheapest miniDV Cam for playback and rewind, use TRV900 strictly for recording.
