The RM-95 is a wired LANC remote which can control any LANC camera or VCR. The device can control the TRV900 and other cameras both in VCR mode and camera mode, although not all camera controls are available (click on above photo to see the controls it has).
The RM-95 can also enter "service mode" on some devices and display and even alter internal settings. Reportedly, you can use it to enable real-time transcoding from analog to firewire on the TRV900, see this note. In the USA you can buy an RM-95 as described here.
If you don't need a portable device, there is also a software version of the RM95 called the PC95. It is popular in Europe, where it is mostly used to enable "DV-in" on camcorders not configured that way at the factory (eg. TRV-890 and the PAL Digital8 models sold in Europe). LynxDV.com sold it at one time. You can also download various freely-available software LANC control programs and make your own PC port->LANC cable ( see Gerd's DV page or this one.) Martin's page has some memory codes to enable different features.
How to use the RM-95 service remote.
1) Connect the RM-95 to the LANC terminal.
2) Set the HOLD switch of the RM-95 to "HOLD" (SERVICE position). If
it has been properly connected, the LCD on the RM95 will display:
EDIT SEARCH+ and EDIT SEARCH- increment and decrement the memory page
number (runs from 0 to F).
FF>> and REW<< increment and decrement the address (runs
from 00 to FF).
The data from the current page and address is displayed as a hexidecimal
byte.
PLAY > and STOP [] increment and decrement the data (can range from
00 to FF).
Data is not written back to nonvolatile memory (page B, C, D, F) until
the PAUSE button is pressed.
After completing adjustments, turn off the main power supply.
Caution: changing the data in memory can make your camera inoperable.
You have been warned.
The camera calculates a checksum on some configuration data on power-up,
and if the result doesn't match the stored checksum, the camera locks up.
See also Martin's page.
Curious fact: if you physically switch the camera off with the RM95 still connected in adjustment mode, the camera stays on. As soon as you switch out of adjustment mode it turns off.

Indications are that these locations are also valid for the Digital 8 cameras, but not for the GV-D900 Video Walkman. At the moment (6/14/99) I have 239 hours on my TRV900 and 30 hours on my TR7000. Update 11/1/01: it is also valid for the VX2000, in one year I put 92 hours on my VX2k (very casual use).
Subject: Direct A/D conversion on TRV-900 (realtime DV transcoding) Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 From: David Black (dave jamsoft com) Much has been written about temporarily disabling DV-in on the Digital-8 camcorders, for the purpose of direct transcoding from analog to firewire. I decided to try a similar experiment on my TRV-900, and sure enough it worked! I did *not* use the "ANIN" program, but just RM-95 emulator software and homebrew LANC cable. Here's how I did it: Changed page 0x00, location 0x01 to value 0x01 (enable changes to NVRAM) Changed page 0x0d, location 0x27 to value 0x62 (was 0x63) As soon as the page 0x0d change was made, I saw analog video input coming through firewire. It was *not* necessary to save the change back to NVRAM. Flipping the LSB back to what it was (value=0x63) immediately returned to normal DV-IN mode. I did this several times to satisfy myself it was for real. While in analog-in mode, I turned off the camcorder, disconnected AC power and removed the battery for 5-10 seconds (as per the "ANIN" web page suggestion), and the analog-in mode went away. When done experimenting, I changed page 0x0d location 0x27 back to 0x63, and page 0x00 location 0x01 back to 0x00, to re-enable NVRAM write protection. The camcorder seems quite back to normal now. This is good news for me, because I want to do some DV digitizing direct into the computer, and didn't really want to fork out $300+ for a DVMC-DA2. -David Black
direct conversion analog--->DV on pd100AP Use RM95 (adjust version) (or rm95emulator or Lremoteprogram.) 1 Start capture program: in my case raptorvideo (disable hardware preview so use only software preview) and make it so that you can capture normal dv from the camera. Connect your analog device (AV to the av connector on the PD100) If you plug out the dv connection and if threre is an analog signal you will see it on the lcd screen. As soon as you plug in the DV cable there is no picture anymore on the LCD screen. (DV prevails !) 3 Connect lanc cabe, display shows 0:00:00 (Page:Data:Adress) 4 remove write protection : change on page 0,adress 01 the data 00 to 01 display shows before change: 0:00:01 after change : 0:01:01 5 disable dv in: go to page D, adress 27 display shows d:E3:27 change data from E3 to 72 6 direct after changing e3 to 72 there is with the still connected dv cable a picture on the lcd screen as well on the pc software preview screen (picture from the analog device) 7 start your analog footage and start capture (with ref avi as long as you want.) 8 after finishing capturing disconnect powersupply and battery from the camera for > 10 seconds. 9 camera is after that in the original state ! write protect is there and dv in is there again. (0:00:01) (d:E3:27) changing on the RM 95 : page : EDIT SEARCH + button + (0-F) EDIT SEARCH - button - Adress: FF + (00-FF) REW - Data: PLAY + (00-FF) STOP - CAUTION : do NOT use the write to non volative ram button. On the rm95 is that PAUSE) (NEVER use it in this procedure !!!!) It works perfect and gives great dv clips (720x675 pal) from my old analog 8 camera. I do not know the data for the NTCS model) but I know that the write enable is the same and the page and adress for the dv in disable is the same. I found out that for dv in disabeling changing the data E3 to all the following data gives the same result: 72,76,7A,7E,B2,B6,BA,BE,F2,F6,and FA. (I use the first one, 72) As long as you not WRITE to non vol ram you can play with changing the data and go back to the original settings by disconnecting the lanc cable and the power for more than 10 seconds. (I put a cover over the PAUSE button !!) It is a good practice to write down on a paper the figures shown on the display before you start changing (you never know.) Use this procedure on YOUR OWN RISK ! Onno (onnosr at bigfoot.com)
